Every year we provide a Thanksgiving meal to all 300 kids, between the ages of 10 and 17, and 50 staff members at the Henry Wade Juvenile Detention Center. This is not just a meal it is a time of worship through our service. The kids see all of the ministries, staff and teachers at the detention center working together to provide a family meal. It’s a picture for them of the Body of Christ working and serving together. For many kids this is the first time for them to experience this type of atmosphere.
We serve a traditional Thanksgiving meal with all the trimmings, sit down together as a family and pray before the meal. For some kids this could be their second or third year to join us for Thanksgiving because they have spent much of their childhood in the system.
We are often asked if individuals can do a one-time volunteer and help serve the meal. For the safety of the children the detention center does not allow one-time volunteers. All volunteers must go through training, have a thorough background check and be committed to serving the kids in detention on a regular basis.
